Kids read all the time during the school year, but what happens in the summer when there is less encouragement to read?
Summer learning loss erases gains made during the school year. The research is clear that children who don’t read or who aren’t read to during the summer can loose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. To help combat this, we need to read with our children and read aloud to our children.
To encourage reading at home, keep reading materials throughout your home and cars. Put books for reading and books with activities at the kitchen table, beside the beds, in family rooms/living rooms/play rooms, in the car and even in the bathroom.
