For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been using custom shampoo and conditioner from a new company called, Formulate. They specifically engineer your shampoo and conditioner to account for your natural hair, your hair goals, where you live, and your lifestyle.
To make your formula, you take a hair quiz online. They pretty much cover all the bases in the quiz about your hair and your environment and then your hair goals. They customize the formula to fit your hair and your needs taking into consideration where you live and the weather there. When I took my hair quiz I listed the following five things as my hair goals: anti-frizz, volumize, improve scalp health, oil control, and color protection.
Formulate has NO sulfates. Sulfates are the things in shampoo that make your hair feel knotty and slick while trying to wash it. Formulate is also free from preservatives, parabens, and is cruelty-free! All bonuses! And very important to those looking for a more natural product.
You choose the scent and they are all as strong as you want them to be. I chose Tidal (coconut, sea, warm sand) because, in my heart, I am a total beach babe! You can also choose the intensity of the scent, I chose STRONG scent, I like my shampoo and detergent to linger. However, it’s not overpowering. I love my scent choices!
The different scents they have are: Green with Envy (green tea and honey), Verdant (grass, lilies, eucalyptus), Tidal (coconut, sea, warm sand), Shoreline (spice, citrus, sea), Freshly Squeezed (sweet orange, tangerine), Burgeon (blooming orange blossom), and At Dawn (green apple, pear, rose).
The packaging is cool. The Shape reminds me of science formulas (like the octagon) I LOVE Pump bottles, we seem to go through a lot of shampoo and body wash in my house, I think the pumps help keep you using a conservative amount and in the end the product lasts longer.
Sometimes, not always, after I wash my hair it feels like there’s a film on my hair. I think that is because it’s a more natural shampoo and when your body is used to more artificial things, adjusting to natural ingredients can be hard. Like switching to natural deodorant – which I plan on doing next… any recos on a GOOD one?
If your formula doesn’t feel right the first time around? They’ll tweak it and send you a new set for free! And if you still aren’t satisfied, they’ll issue you a free refund. Talk about amazing customer service.
ANTI-FRIZZ
Sometimes, not always, after I wash my hair it feels like there’s a film on my hair. I think that is because it’s a more natural shampoo and when your body is used to more artificial things, adjusting to natural ingredients can be hard. However, I feel like this helps with the level of FRIZZ. I’ve always had an issue with frizzy hair. It’s been a combination of damaged hair from over styling and the humidity.
VOLUMIZE
Using Formulate definitely added some more volume back into my hair! It also made my hair feel thicker and is easier to fix with my natural curl.

OIL CONTROL
I wash my hair every day. I have too! With other products my hair is oily by the end of the day. I do not notice this with Formulate.
COLOR PROTECTION
I was able to move my color appointment out 2 more weeks than normal. I am not sure if this is because of the shampoo or if it’s because I have been fixing my hair curlier these days instead of flat ironing. Either way… I moved it out 2 weeks and for me that’s a WIN!
